The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) invites all journalists to attend its 2019 Annual Scientific Meeting — the country’s largest interdisciplinary conference in the field of aging — from November 13 to 17 in Austin, Texas. Media representatives intending to cover the meeting may register free of charge.
An estimated 4,000 professionals are expected to attend the five-day gathering at the Austin Convention Center and JW Marriott Austin. The theme for 2019 is “Strength in Age — Harnessing the Power of Networks,” and the program schedule contains nearly 500 scientific sessions featuring research presented for the first time. Noteworthy meeting highlights include:
- A wealth of story ideas: GSA offers direct access to leading authorities and new discoveries in gerontology. Explore the latest developments related to innovative technologies, Social Security and retirement, long-term care, human longevity, and much more. A mobile app featuring a searchable program of all meeting sessions will be launched by the end of October.
- Press briefing: On Thursday, November 14, GSA is partnering with AARP on a lunchtime press briefing. In honor of National Family Caregiving Month, presenters will discuss the AARP Public Policy Institute’s new release, “Valuing the Invaluable: 2019 Update Charting a Path Forward.” In addition, AARP and UsAgainstAlzheimer’s will also announce the Be Brain Powerful® campaign and kick off a new nationwide call to action that empowers women to take charge of their brain health.
- Keynote address: GSA will welcome social scientist and physician Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, the co-director of the Yale Institute for Network Science. Using experiments involving many thousands of people in online networks, in developing world villages, and in for-profit firms, his group has demonstrated how social connections shape our health, wealth, productivity, and security. His startling findings present intriguing new evidence that our real-life social networks shape virtually every aspect of our lives.
- Public event on dog aging: On the evening of Thursday, November 14, join GSA for “Living in Dog Years: The Science of How Dogs Age and the Implications for Human Aging.” Learn how The Dog Aging Project was conceived and is being implemented, and how the results may be translated to humans! Presenters will provide insight into the first large-scale longitudinal study of canine aging in more than 10,000 dogs along with double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of rapamycin to slow aging in dogs.
- Networking opportunities: The Press Room, which serves as a base of operations for reporters, provides a venue for discussion about emerging issues on the aging beat. There will be a reception for reporters the evening of Friday, November 15.
The complimentary media registration allows access to all scientific sessions and the Exhibit Hall. Registration information is available at www.geron.org/press.
We look forward to seeing you in Austin!
